Not Looking For Love In February

February 12, 2020 by in category The Writing Journey by Denise Colby tagged as ,

February is all about love and romance. But back in 1992, I had just gotten out of a relationship and I wanted space to find myself again. Time to myself, alone. Let’s just say I wasn’t looking for love in February that year.

My friends from work asked if I wanted to go to Disneyland for the evening. I was excited to be out with a large group of friends to ignore all my problems and forget about the guy who wasn’t right for me. I definitely wasn’t looking for love.

But I knew as soon as this cute guy walked up to our group that I wanted to get to know him more. I always carried my little camera with me (way before cell phones) and heartily suggested we should take a group picture before we went inside. He immediately came and sat down next to me on the bench. (and I do have a picture, but I don’t know where it is.)

The curiousness grew.

We sat next to each other on rides and talked a lot. Did I mention there were seventeen in our group that night? Yet we kept seeking each other out. Sat next to each other on all the rides. It was a fun night. Except at the end. With both our insecurities rising we each went are separate ways that night and didn’t see each other again for over a month.

Who knew I was going to meet my future husband that night. And that we would be celebrating this month, the date we met, 28 years later. The old adage ‘love will find you when you are least looking for it’ comes to mind. I definitely was not looking for love.

I was not the one who hit my future husband!
But I was sitting in the middle.
I fell in love with both him and his sense of humor that night.

We still go to Disneyland, sometimes with a group and sometimes by ourselves, and we still sit next to each other as we ride all the rides.

Maybe February is truly the month of love after all!

I try to write fun February posts. A few years ago I wrote Dating Lessons from Wall-E, which is still one of my favorites. Check out my other Disney related posts at my blog denisemcolby.com.

RWA 2012 RITA Awards VIDEOS including OCC’s own Tessa Dare along with Joanna Bourne and Ann Aguirre by Jina Bacarr

August 11, 2012 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Even Sleeping Beauty wouldn’t have gotten a wink of sleep at the RWA 2012 Conference in Anaheim near Disneyland. I didn’t. I was as busy as the Mad Hatter running from workshop to workshop and shooting video. Lots of video. 12 GB worth. That’s 12 billion bytes as in billion.

This week I’m going to spotlight three of my favorite RITA award winners, beginning with OCC’s own TESSA DARE!!  Super congrats, Tessa, well deserved.

Tessa Dare, winner of the RITA for “A Night to Surrender” — her thank you to her hubby is beautiful.

Joanna Bourne’s wonderful tribute to teachers everywhere in her RITA speech for “The Black Hawk”

And here is the video everyone is talking about…

Ann Aguirre’s RITA speech for YA “Enclave” including her now infamous “interpretive dance.”

Now if you’ll excuse me, like Snow White’s dwarf, Sleepy, I’m…going to…take a nap…zzzzzzzzzzz

Best,
Jina

Romance Writers of America 2006 Conference in Atlanta with Jina Bacarr

July 11, 2010 by in category Archives tagged as , , , , , , , , , , , , , , ,

Yes, you read the title correctly. That’s the RWA Conference in Atlanta back in 2006.

Where did the time go? Several SPICE books, blogs, videos, Tweets and Facebook friends later, I’ve been thinking about all the wonderful things RWA and OCC/RWA offer its members.

Especially the annual conference. It’s always an exciting time. Here’s the official information about this year’s conference:

“RWA is proud to host its 30th Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, at the Walt Disney World Swan and Dolphin Resort, July 28 – 31, 2010.

“Be sure to join us to enhance your writing and knowledge of the ins and outs of publishing at more than 100 workshops; get the inside track at panels and round-tables featuring publishing professionals; schedule a one-on-one pitch meeting with an acquiring editor or literary agent; attend parties and network with the stars of romance fiction; and be a part of RWA’s massive, 500-author strong “Readers for Life” charity book signing. And let’s not forget the 2010 RITA and Golden Heart Awards.” For more information go to the RWA website.

To everyone who is going, have a great time!

I’ll never forget my first RWA conference. (What girl ever forgets her first?)

So here is a video I made taking you back to July 2006 and the Romance Writers of America Conference in Atlanta.

From the Literacy Signing to the Spice Books workshop to the Harlequin party and the RITA Awards, re-live the conference in this fun video podcast.

As you can see in the photo above, I signed copies of The Blonde Geisha that year at the RWA Conference in Atlanta.

Hard to believe that since then, The Blonde Geisha has been translated into French, German, Italian, Spanish, Polish and two weeks ago it came out in the Czech Republic as “The Geisha with the Emerald Eyes.”

So sit back and relax and come with me as we go back to the RWA Conference in Atlanta in 2006!

Best,
Jina
