I love film noir.
The tough heroes with the beautiful, wisecracking dolls glammed up with dark lipstick and tight suits. Not to mention high-heeled pumps that showed off a great pair of legs.
There’s something about black and white photography that puts you on edge, waiting for something to happen. Maybe it’s the subtle play of shadows that hides dark secrets . . . and the slow reveal when the camera pulls back to uncover the villain ready to take out the hero.
Until he gets the drop on him first.
Writing is like film noir. The shades of gray slowly reveal the story, the romance, the thrills.
There there’s the blue and the gray.
A time in our history that will never be forgotten. Civil War re-enactments are more popular than ever. What if you dressed up as a Confederate officer and–
Found yourself whisked back to 1862?
That’s what happens to my heroine in LOVE ME FOREVER.
To celebrate LOVE ME FOREVER being on sale for the month of August, I thought it would be fun to take some b&w RF stock and pair them with colorful backgrounds. I’ve included two of them here.
And who is Pauletta Sue, her beautiful twin in the covered wagon above — oh, my, she’s the major’s fiancée!
Till next time…

Do your characters keep you awake at nights?
Mine do.
First, they wanted to be Kindle Scout winners…
Now they want to be video stars.
And it’s all Cinderella’s fault.
Cindy had so much fun at the ball and then meeting the queen and getting her picture taken everywhere she went, she didn’t want to give it up and spend her days sitting in the castle watching old movies.
So she riled up the characters in my Kindle Scout winner, LOVE ME FOREVER, and convinced them they could be stars.
Cindy went Hollywood on me.
She’s now producing a bunch of short videos with highlights from LOVE ME FOREVER and yes, she even convinced me to do the voiceovers.
How could I refuse? You want to shout your book to the rooftops and do your very best to promote it, so I’ve been slaving behind a hot microphone, and guess what, I’ve got some videos for you.
I hope you enjoy them…

So what’s the next step in the Kindle Scout experience? I’ve received tons of support from other Kindle Scout winners with retweeting, blogging, YouTubing, etc. It’s been an extraordinary experience, kinda like joining a sorority or fraternity. A sense of having each other’s back and always being there if someone has a question.
And we’ve started our own Facebook page: KP Authors. Check it out!
Thanks for coming along on my journey with me…and come back next month for more on my Kindle Scout experience as the program grows…I wouldn’t be surprised if I have more videos for you.

I’ll never forget the time I had the chance to see the cabin where Lincoln was born. I was nine years old.
It had a dirt floor. Cool, I thought, his mom can’t yell at him for tracking dirt into the house.
It wasn’t the “real” cabin,of course, but a symbolic reconstruction in Central Kentucky to honor our sixteenth President.
I grew up in different parts of the US…but my favorite time was in Lexington, Kentucky.
We lived in what I called the “Civil War” house. It was a big ole home out in the boonies with a barn and plenty of Kentucky bluegrass. According to the locals, the antebellum house was built before the Civil War.
Over the years, the house had different owners, but it never lost its splendor in my eyes. Sure, it was run-down and the plumbing more often than not didn’t work. God knows, it was cold in the winter, but my dad–a historical buff–rented it for as long as my poor mom could take it. It wasn’t easy for her with no dishwasher or washer and an old, wood burning stove with a husband and two kids to take care of. No neighbors for what seemed like miles.
I loved it.
I’d race around the house with fireplaces taller than I was for hours, pretending I was hosting tea with fancy ladies or meeting that special gentleman in what I called my “secret” room. Wearing my mother’s long dresses, I dreamed of being a true Southern belle (years later I got my own authentic hoop skirt from the costume department when I was doing theater).
So it’s no wonder I followed my heart and wrote my own Civil War novel — “The Bride Wore Gray.” It’s a time travel romance where my modern day heroine, Liberty Jordan, meets up with her ancestor–who looks exactly like her! The only problem is, Pauletta Sue, is a Southern spy…
